What is yoga
Yoga is SO MANY things! So, let's start with what it is NOT. Yoga is NOT a religion. It has bases in the Hindu and Buddhist religions, but it is not a religion itself.
Yoga is not *just* a form of exercise. It truly is a lifestyle.
Yoga is an eight limbed philosophy. It encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual ideas. It is a discipline intended to bring balance. Balance of mind, body, and spirit. The origin of the word means to yoke or to unite.
The origins of yoga can be traced back thousands of years, to the ancient texts known as the Upanishads.
The ultimate goal of yoga is one of self discovery and liberation. Through meditation, it is believed that one can see themselves clearly, understand what is true about who we are, and to let go of that which no longer serves us. We are able to become aware of our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, giving us the ability to change them when they no longer serve our purpose. We gain the tools to make better choices in life, and live a fuller, more contented life.
